  • Research summary

The purpose of the research is to explore the opportunity to improve patient care and redesign services by equipping patients with wearable devices that allow vital signs to be monitored remotely—for example, allowing a patient to be monitored at home after they have been discharged from hospital.

The research will target c1000 patients who will be asked to wear devices to allow information about their vital signs to be captured and stored for analysis.

The research will address two main questions:

    1) Is it possible in principle to use the information captured from the devices to improve the treatment of the patient and redesign services?
    2) How practical is it to implement remote patient monitoring (RPM)?

To answer the first question, the information gathered from the devices will be analysed retrospectively to see if it correlated with what actually happened to the patients. We will be looking for patterns to see, for example, whether the monitoring could have picked up a nascent problem before it became more serious, or whether monitoring could have saved the patient from having to make a trip to see their GP.

To answer the second question, we will collect information about the practicalities of RPM. For example, do patients remember to wear and recharge the devices, how often do the devices get lost or damaged, how long does it take to explain the devices to a patient, and so on.

The study is non-interventional. There will be no change to the treatment and care of the participating patients. The data collected will be analysed retrospectively and will not be monitored in real time.
