Research summary
Stroke in children and young people is associated with long-term disability across multiple domains of health and well-being including movement, communication, socialisation, learning, and behaviour. Little is known of the impact of stroke on the broader family, particularly parents/carers.
The aims of this qualitative study are to explore the health, social care and educational needs from the perspective of young people (aged 12-18) who have had a stroke, their parents, and the parents/carers of children who have had a stroke (at any time from birth through to 18 years). The findings of this study will be used to inform the development of a dedicated child stroke support service, run jointly between the Evelina London Children’s Hospital and the Stroke Association.
Young people and parents/carers known to paediatric neuroscience services at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Bristol Royal Hospital For Children and Great Ormond Street Hospital will be informed of the study.
Participants will be invited to participate in a 1:1 interview either via telephone or face to face, and/or to complete a survey. They will be able to participate in one or both of these activities. The study will be open for participation for a 12 month period. The findings will be published in peer-reviewed scientific publication, and summary of findings on the Stroke Association web-site.REC name
