Research summary
The purpose of this research project is to answer the question: what are the needs and experiences of women with female genital mutilation (FGM) during the post-partum period? The eradication of FGM is supported by the WHO, UNICEF and the UK government. Maternity services are often the first point of contact women with FGM have with the UK health services. While previous research has focused on antenatal care; there remains a lack of research focusing on post-partum care. As women with FGM continue to have poor perineal outcomes post-birth, this is an area which needs exploring. Understanding the experiences of women with FGM is essential if their needs are to be met. The findings of the research will be used to develop a postnatal support intervention to meet the needs of women with FGM in the post-partum period. The research will be conducted in a specialist FGM clinic at University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW). Semi-structured interviews lasting approximately one hour will be held with consenting participants.
