  • Research summary

Complications during general anaesthesia are rare, but small babies particularly preterm babies and those with congenital heart disease are among the most vulnerable. There is a real paucity of information about many aspects of the conduct anaesthesia in young babies. The ‘normal’ range for vital signs, such as blood pressure are poorly defined in this age group and it is not clear how the changes in many vital signs which can occur during general anaesthesia could influence subsequent health or outcome. This study will examine the peri-operative management of neonates paying particular attention to vital sign changes which trigger intervention to better define critical points during anaesthesia and evaluate associations with outcome at 90 days.
