  • Data collection arrangements

    Samples will be obtained from adults (healthy volunteers & patients with diagnosed with liver or gastrointestinal disorders) who are research participants and also from patients attending Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust as part of their standard clinical care. Samples will be collected with informed written consent either as surplus to clinical diagnostics or as additional research samples.
    Samples of blood, stool, urine, saliva, skin swabs and digestive system tissue from clinical procedures will be collected and stored. Samples may be fresh or preserved and may be processed to separate blood serum, plasma and cell types and extract metabolites, DNA or RNA.
    Basic demographic data will be recorded (including ethnicity, smoking and alcohol status). Medical information will also be documented (diagnosis, treatment and outcome).
    Researchers are not permitted to re-contact participants to obtain further samples or data.
    Samples/tissue will be stored within the Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, under University of Nottingham HTA licence: 12265.

    Researchers within The Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/research/groups/giandliverdiseases/index.aspx) and NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre (https://nottinghambrc.nihr.ac.uk/) and collaborators, will be able to request samples following review by access committee. This will enable new hypotheses to be tested through pilot studies and new technologies to be developed/optimised and biomarkers to be identified/assessed as part of translational research for improved patient care, aligned with the aims of the research centres.
