Data collection arrangements
When people have received care from one of five mental health trusts (Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Swindon, Wiltshire, Bath and North East Somerset) as well as NHS cancer services, in partnership with the University of Oxford, the Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust's clinical records team will link those people's clinical records with those from the National Cancer Registry, as well as data collected by the Office for National Statistics about hospital attendances.
This linking will be performed once and the resulting data stored securely in a national academic research database, accessible only to approved and qualified researchers. Researchers using the data cannot identify a person by name, address, NHS number or date of birth and the combined data do not allow people's identity to be inferred from specifics about their medical history.
Research programme
People treated for a mental illness appear to have increased risk of having worse outcomes if they develop cancer. The reasons for this are not clear. By linking together data about cancer care with mental health treatment records, we hope to develop understanding of why some people have worse outcomes. For example, it may be that people with certain mental illnesses seek help for cancer symptoms later than others. This project will help the NHS and academic researchers analyse data to test different hypotheses about the links between cancer and mental health and inform us about opportunities to improve care.
