  • Research summary

This study is an adjunct to a quantitative study which has received REC approval (217195) and is currently recruiting patients. In this study, we are exploring a new mode of mechanical ventilation, Neurally Adjusted Ventilatory Assist (NAVA), for infants admitted to PICU with acute viral bronchiolitis. The reason for the current application is to ascertain the acceptability and practical aspects of study procedures for the above study to both parents/ carers and staff who were involved. This is important as the hope is that the information gathered will inform a large multi-centre study. Interviewing parents and staff as part of a feasibility study allows us to explore issues that may arise from the consent process through to the study procedures themselves this in turn ensures we design a lager study which is acceptable to parents/carers and is practical on a clinical level.

Data will be collected from parents/ carers using semi-structured 1:1 interviews and staff will be interviewed using focus group interviews. Staff will include consultants, doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. Staff and families will be contacted following the clinical trial procedures and will be interviewed at a time convenient to them before they leave the hospital or via phone if their child is no longer an in-patient (parents) and staff will be interviewed before or following staff meetings. Families will be interviewed by a member of the hospital or university psychology or research team.
