  • Research summary

The question addressed in this research will be ‘what are the experiences of parents whose school-aged children have been referred for an Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) assessment?’ This is of importance to parent’s whose voice should be heard in relation to decisions about and provision for their children. The findings will be relevant to professionals who work with parents and children, for whom an understanding of parental narratives and experiences up to the point of assessment is key to their work.
The narrative accounts of parents will be sought through individual narrative interviews. Parents whose children have been referred to the multiagency assessment service will be eligible to participate in the study. In line with narrative theory and existing research, the narrative interviews will be completed in the homes of the participants. This is to ensure that participants feel comfortable in their environment, are not inconvenienced regarding travel, and to promote that the research is independent of their child’s assessment. When completing the interviews, I will adhere to my Local Authority safe-working policy.
In line with a narrative methodology and analysis, I will complete one interview with each participant. I will then meet with participants a second time, bringing my transcripts and initial analysis to them for discussion, ensuring my data is true to their constructs and experiences.
