  • Research summary

This study will test whether we can adapt and use a 6 month programme from the United States called “The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care” (NAP SACC). Goals of the programme are to improve the nutritional quality of food, amount of physical activity, staff-child interactions and policies. We will change NAP SACC and test whether we can work with child care providers to make the environments healthier. Child care providers in North Somerset and Gloucestershire will be invited to take part in the study if they provide lunch to children aged 2-4. The providers will include day nurseries, private nursery schools, maintained nurseries, Children’s Centres with nurseries and pre-schools.

This project has 3 phases. In Phase 1 we have adapted and developed NAP SACC over 6 months. In Phase 2 we will test NAP SACC in 6 child care providers chosen at random compared to 6 other providers. Separate ethics applications have been submitted and approved for Phases 1 and 2. In Phase 3 we will conduct a process evaluation to assess the feasibility and acceptability of delivering the NAP SACC UK intervention and trial methods prior to a larger, definitive trial. The process evaluation will include the initial and final NAP SACC UK self-assessment completed by a child care provider staff member; observations of at least one meeting between the NAP SACC UK Partners and each of the childcare providers; child care provider and NAP SACC Partner completed logs of NAP SACC meetings including goals, support given and progress made; and for the providers, changes made and reflections on these changes; semi-structured interviews with child care managers in all the providers, a sample of staff, the NAP SACC Partners and sufficient numbers of parents until saturation is reached.
