  • Research summary

This study will test whether we can adapt and use a 6 month programme from the United States called “The Nutrition and Physical Activity Self Assessment for Child Care” (NAP SACC). Goals of the programme are to improve the nutritional quality of food, amount of physical activity, staff-child interactions and policies. We will change NAP SACC and test whether we can work with child care providers to make the environments healthier. Child care providers in North Somerset and Cardiff will be invited to take part in the study if they provide lunch to children aged 2-4. The providers will include day nurseries, private nursery schools, maintained nurseries, Children’s Centres with nurseries and pre-schools.

This project has 2-phases. In Phase 1 we will adapt and develop NAP SACC over 6 months. An application for phase 1 has been approved previously. In Phase 2 we will test NAP SACC UK in a pilot randomised controlled trial. 6 child care providers chosen at random will receive the intervention over 6 months, they will be compared to 6 other providers who continue as normal with no intervention. Measurements will be taken at baseline and after the intervention. Measurements include an environmental audit of the nursery, parent completed health economics questionnaire including the toddler quality of life tool (PedsQL) and child measurements (height, weight, 24 hour food diary, accelerometer assessed physical activity).
