Research summary
MySurgery is an app supported by NHS organisations designed to help patients get the best possible outcome from their surgery. Surgical care is complex and by using this app patients and their friends and family can learn how to avoid risk before, during and after their operation (whatever the procedure) in a simple, jargon-free and step by step manner. MySurgery is animated and takes patients through how to prepare for surgery, what to expect from their care, the warning signs to look out for, what information to provide and the questions to ask. It was created by healthcare professionals, safety experts and patients working together at Imperial College London, and it encourages a patient’s involvement in their own care. MySurgery can be downloaded onto iPhones for free from iTunes.
The current study is a validation study designed to assess patients’ views regarding the content, usability and desirability of MySurgery, and whether patients' perceptions of their preparedness for surgery and willingness to be involved in their care increase after using the app. Specifically we would like to assess the views of patients who are due to have surgery and to whom the app will hold particular relevance and salience. Patients would be invited to participate via an information sheet and with informed consent at pre-operative surgical clinics at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and St Mary’s hospital, London. Permission to collect data will be sought from all clinicians at corresponding clinics before commencement of the study.
Those who consent to participate will be given the opportunity to navigate through the app on an iPad. They will be asked to complete a short questionnaire before and after viewing the app to record their views. Patient responses will be treated confidentially.
