Research summary
The progression of Dementia can vary markedly between individuals where health deterioration worsens over time. Where it has been determined that a person living with dementia is unable to make a decision for themselves, care home staff must deliver care that is in the person's best interests. Best interest decision-making on goals of care at the end of life is complex and can become a significant burden for both family carers and health and social care staff. The aim of the Family Carer Decision Support (FCDS) intervention is to inform family carers on end of life care options for a person living with advanced dementia via the Comfort Care Booklet and Family Care Conference. The benefit for family carers is that they can better understand the risks and benefits of care options and actively participate in care planning for family members with health care providers. This study will take a "train the trainer" approach to promote family incorporated decision making by training the care home staff to deliver the FCDS intervention.
