  • Research summary

Together with other researchers across Europe, we are developing an online service ‘MyPath’ to support patient-centred care in cancer clinics. Patient-centred care means putting patient’s needs and preferences at the centre of their care and ensuring decisions are shared between them, their families, and healthcare teams.
Information about physical symptoms and well-being is collected from patients (online via an app on a phone/tablet, or a website) before routine appointments and shared with the healthcare team to identify issues to be discussed and managed. There is already a lot of evidence to show the benefit of this approach so this will be part of patients routine clinical care, rather than research.
However, we do want to carry out research to evaluate how MyPath is implemented into routine care and how we can tailor and improve it for future use in other sites. For this, we will use a mixed methods approach. We will collect data on the number and proportions of eligible patients enrolled on MyPath and completing MyPath assessments, and how the clinical team are using it. We would also like to collect data about patients general health and well-being. From consenting patients, we will also collect data on their healthcare usage and general costs and clinical process data. Where possible, this data will be collected by a researcher from the patient's electronic medical records. Where data cannot be obtained in this way, we will ask patients to self-report via a questionnaire once a month online via a secure website called REDCAP.
We will also ask a subset of participants to consent to qualitative evaluation of implementation of MyPath - this will include methods such as semi-structured interviews, focus groups, participatory workshops, and observations with patients and clinicians using MyPath.
