  • Research summary

We do not fully understand the mechanisms that initiate contractions, nor do we understand why the muscles of the uterus are in a less contractile state during the majority of pregnancy. The aim of this study is to investigate how and why labour occurs preterm, at term and post term. To achieve this we will be collecting samples of the uterine muscle wall (myometrium) at caesarean section and hysterectomy. These samples will be anonymised and used immediately or stored for analysis of various potential factors that may affect labour.
