Research summary
In MATCH (the prequel to this study) we set up a cardiac MRI service specifically for patients with heart failure. We used free breathing imaging techniques to identify different patterns of heart scarring in patients with symptoms of heart failure with and without diabetes. We are still conducting the long term follow up for these patients to understand the importance of these changes.
In this study we are inviting 300 patients already referred for clinically indicated cardiac MRI do collect further details about the importance of heart scarring in patients with and without diabetes. In addition to the routine clinical scan each patient will undergo clinical assessment, 1-2 additional scan sequences during their scan (max 10 minutes), blood tests taken at the time of cannulation and follow up.
We have specifically designed the study to minimise inconvenience to patients and provide “real world” data from patients with heart failure and diabetes. We anticipate that this study will help us better understand why patients the combination of heart failure and diabetes leads to increased mortality. By better understanding these mechanisms we will be able to develop interventions to change them and improve outcomes.
