Research summary
The myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are a type of blood cancer arising in cells in the bone marrow. At present we do not fully understand the factors that cause these cancers, or why they affect different people in different ways. There is also a need to find better ways to treat patients with these cancers. This research is being done to address these questions by developing models that can be used in the laboratory to investigate MPNs. In the long term this has the potential to improve the care of patients with MPNs.\n We have developed techniques that allow bone marrow cells and blood cells from healthy people to be examined in the laboratory. We want to use these techniques to examine bone marrow cells from patients with MPNs. We will ask permission to use ‘waste’ blood and bone marrow cells that were taken from patients with MPNs for a bone marrow transplant, that are no longer needed by those patients. We will examine these blood and bone marrow cells in laboratory investigations using techniques that have been developed by looking at the same type of cells from healthy people. The research will involve doctors and scientists working together, at The Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, The National Blood Service, The University of Sheffield and the University of York.\n
