Research summary
Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common, and adults are getting it at younger ages. This is called ‘early-onset adult type 2 diabetes’ (EOT2D). This is worrying because heart, kidney and other problems related to diabetes can happen at an earlier age.
Digital self-management education programmes help people with diabetes understand and manage their condition. However, no digital self-management education programmes have been designed specifically for people with EOT2D. To address this, we developed a programme (EOT2D MyDESMOND) to meet the needs of people with EOT2D through working with people who have lived experience of the condition.
This study is funded by Diabetes UK and aims to see how many people with EOT2DM register to use the programme, and explore what people think of the programme and whether it improves health and well-being. Once participants sign up to the study, they can use the programme at their own pace over 12-months. Participants aged 18-45 years who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before age 40 can take part.
The study does not involve any study visits. Participants provide all their data remotely via a secure website. Data collected includes their blood sugar levels and information about their well-being. They are asked to provide this when they sign up to the programme, and at 3, 6 and 12-months. After 12-months, participants can take part in an interview to explore what they thought of the programme, and any reasons why they used, or did not use, the programme. We will also interview key stakeholders with experience in EOT2DM care to explore any barriers and facilitators to rolling out the EOT2D MyDESMOND programme within a ‘real-world’ setting. The aim of the interviews is to develop a clear strategy to support the implementation of EOT2D MyDESMOND within care pathways for people with EOT2D.
