Research summary
We want to discover whether a new test can detect bacteria called Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma in left over (waste) sexual health urine or swab samples. We want to know whether the test can show if the bacteria are resistant to antibiotics.
These bacteria can cause infections of the genital tract and the lungs and are linked to premature birth of babies, genital and lung infections. Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma can cause symptoms related to sexual health such as discharge and pain on passing urine.
At the moment there is no commonly used quick test to detect the bacteria and it can be difficult for doctors to know whether a patient has an infection. If this new test works it will benefit patients as it will help doctors find Ureaplasma and Mycoplasma infections they can treat patients quickly and try to prevent infections doing harm. It will also mean that doctors will know which antibiotic should be used to treat the infections.
We would like to recruit 500 males and 500 females to participate in the study. The participants will attend the sexual health clinic and testing as per standard practice, instead of putting thier surplus (waste) samples into the bin, with thier permission, we will use the samples (urine/swab) for the purpose of the study.
