Research summary
Conwy West Primary Care Cluster seeks to determine the social return on investment (SROI) of the MY LIFE project. This project is a priority due to a high number of residents with Type 2 Diabetes, or who are at risk of developing this disease. In Conwy West, 60% of adults are of an unhealthy weight and 47% are not meeting physical activity guidelines. The purpose of the MY LIFE project is to prevent Type 2 Diabetes by supporting people in increasing physical activity and developing healthier lifestyles.
The aim of SROI is to establish how inputs (e.g. costs, staffing) are converted into outputs (e.g. numbers of patients seen), and subsequently into outcomes that matter to patients (e.g. reduced obesity and diabetes; improved physical activity and mental wellbeing). The social value generated by these outcomes will be estimated in a similar way to cost-benefit analysis. The ratio of social value generated per £1 invested will be calculated. The SROI will be conducted through the six stages outlined in the 2012 Cabinet Office Guide to Social Return on Investment: identifying stakeholders, developing a theory of change, calculating inputs, evidencing and valuing outcomes, establishing impact, and calculating the SROI ratio.
MY LIFE participants will be the target population. The aim is to recruit 60 participants from June 2021 to February 2022. The inclusion criteria will be participants who at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes with a BMI score of 30 or more and who have been referred to the MY LIFE programme. Participants will be referred onto 8-week programme designed to increase physical activity and improve lifestyle. Participants (n=60) will complete baseline and follow-up questionnaires, as well as interviews (n=10). The results will be summarised in a public-facing report for Conwy West Primary Care Cluster and in an academic paper.
