  • Research summary

Children with IBD are often malnourished at the time of diagnosis – which is usually as a result of poor intake. Nutritional therapy is a key component of management, particularly during the treatment and recovery phase. Barriers to improved nutrition include issues around food, perceived intolerances, lack of appetite and early satiety. We aim to explore this further using My Health Vault as it is a novel real time digital reporting tool incorporating food diary records, weight/ height interface, allowing young people to input information on their appetite and current eating habits. A paediatric dietitian will be able flag early warning signs regarding loss of appetite, disordered eating, weight loss and changes in bowel habits.

The IBD portal was developed for use in adults but is yet to be tried in a paediatric population. As many of the children with IBD are teenagers we feel this digital platform will appeal to the technologically savvy teenager, providing some autonomy and independence around the management of their chronic illness. We hypothesize that having more immediate access to a dietitian via a digital platform will allow us to track oral nutrition supplement use, characterize the dietary habits of children with IBD and prolong remission through the identification of early warning signs e.g. loss of appetite, changes in stool output etc.
