  • Research summary

The proposed study is part of a wider programme called RE-STAR (Regulating Emotions - Strengthening Adolescent Resilience). In RE-STAR we are trying to understand the way people with a diagnosis of ADHD and/or autism manage their emotions in the face of day-to-day stresses and hassles, particularly in school. This is important because we also know that emotion regulation (ER) problems in young people with ADHD and/or autism increase the risk of adolescent depression. The overall goal of RE-STAR, therefore, is to find ways to help young people with a diagnosis of ADHD and/or autism to better manage their emotions and so reduce the likelihood of developing depression during adolescence.

Our first task is to develop a new self-report measure of ER that could be used in later RE-STAR work packages, since existing measures fail to take account of the young persons' experiences and points of view, being developed in neurotypical populations or reliant on parent/clinician reports.

In an earlier study (My Emotions and Me: Part 1) we collected accounts of ER from young people with autism and/or ADHD. We then used these accounts to develop an extended prototype measure 'My Emotions in School (MES)'. The current study will focus on the psychometric evaluation of the extended MES prototype. We will administer the MES scale to a large sample of young people with varying levels of autism and ADHD traits to examine a) MES’s psychometric properties, b) how well the MES characterises ER problems in young people with neuroatypicalities (YPN) over and above existing self-report measures. Young people aged 11-15 attending mainstream school will be eligible to participate. They will be recruited through schools and NHS clinics. Participation will involve completion of online questionnaires.

RE-STAR is a four year programme. My Emotions and Me:Part 2 will be completed over a 12-month period.
