Research summary
This study would examine therapists’ and clients’ use of language in couple therapy for depression. It would examine therapists’ and clients’ use of language in couple therapy sessions. The study was guided by the following question: how did clients’ and therapists’ communication promote mutual understanding between partners in couple therapy? The study would explore the process of couple therapy for depression, by analysing the specific language used, based on previous research on couple therapy techniques. It would focus specifically on interactions that demonstrated mutual understanding between partners, as defined by previous research. The aim of the study was to provide further knowledge of the therapist interventions that facilitated empathy between partners in couple therapy for depression.
