  • Research summary

This project aims to look at the effect of music on the play experiences of children and young people aged 5-25 years (CYP) with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Play experiences for CYP with PMLD are often compromised, and there is a lack of research and evidence into play and play interventions for learners with PMLD. This project will explore the impact of the Musical Play intervention on the playful experiences for children and young people with PMLD. It builds on the positive findings of previous Master research and the development of the Musical Play intervention.

The research questions are the following:
1.What is the effect of Musical Play on the play-activity of children and young people with PMLD?
2.Does Musical Play impact on peer awareness and peer-play for children and young people with PMLD?
3.What effect does the use of Musical Play have on staff experiences of facilitating play for children and young people with PMLD?

The study will take place in two established specialist educational settings in the West Midlands, England. Participants of the study will be children and young people with PMLD and their supporting staff members. Staff will be trained to deliver the Musical Play intervention for participants with PMLD. Staff will deliver the intervention for up to 30 minutes per session, twice-a-week for a period of 12-weeks (one academic term).
The number of times participants take part in the intervention will vary. The intervention will be delivered to participants with PMLD at different time points over a twelve-week period.
The outcomes of this project will inform the practice of all those working with, or supporting, individuals with PMLD.
