Research summary
The proposed project is a study of the potential benefit of music based interventions for people with dementia being cared for in community hospitals and the possible effect on increasing interactions between staff and patients and enhancing wellbeing.
In addition, can it be shown that music based interventions show a reduction in negative expressed behaviours? The study will examine the interventions in the context of its potential to improve patient experience and enhance staff experiences of caring.
Community hospitals provide care and support predominantly for frail older peole with multi-morbidities admitted from an acute hospital or from home/a care home. Approximately 40-50% of people admitted to a community hospital will live with dementia or memory loss. Improving care for people with dementia in these facilities is an urgent priority to optimise benefit from the admission.
People who have a dementia are known to stay in hospital for longer and experience poorer outcomes than those people who do not have a dementia or cognitive impairment. It is made clear in the Prime Ministers Challenge on Dementia 2020 that informed and supportive care for people with dementia will help to improve the experience of care in hospital.
