Project Overview: The Open Access Musculoskeletal (MSK) Imaging Dataset project aims to create a research database in the form of a comprehensive catalogue of musculoskeletal imaging, acquired during routine clinical care.

    Data Type & Source:
We will curate a collection of anonymised musculoskeletal imaging datasets collected through routine care at Alder
    Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust.
These dataset will be drawn from the PACS system, and will be systematically categorised to encompass a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions and medical imaging modalities, including but not limited to:
    • Radiographs (X-rays)
    • Ultrasonography (USS)
    • Computerised Tomography (CT) scans
    • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scans

Datasets will undergo continuous review and expansion, with new scans added to increase their size and diversity. Each specific use case/ disease area, will be detailed as an appendix to this protocol.

All imaging data will be fully anonymised and enhanced with expert annotations to ensure high-quality, clinically relevant information.

  • Research programme

This curated dataset will support academic research, and the development, training, and validation of computer vision models designed to assist in the diagnosis and prognostication of musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. By enabling advancements in AI-driven healthcare solutions, the project seeks to improve patient outcomes, support academic research, and drive commercial innovation within the musculoskeletal field.
