The Tissue Bank runs two prospective donor schemes (MS and PD) across the UK, where potential donors are consented, along with their next of kin before death and carry a dedicated donor card. Information to assist the individual to make an informed decision is available in the form of a donor information sheet and the Tissue Bank
encourages donors to contact the office to discuss any questions they have on the donation procedure.
The Tissue Bank collects tissue in a variety of formats (snap-frozen, fixed and cryopreserved, fixed paraffin embedded) in order to satisfy most research requirements. The Tissue Bank also liaises with researchers who have special
tissue requirements, e.g. isolation of cells from freshly donated material, imaging techniques, etc. to maximise the benefits from the donated material. The Tissue Bank acts as a National Tissue Bank supplying researchers in the UK but also supplies tissue worldwide, thus maximising the possible benefits of the donated tissue.

  • Research programme

The vision of the Tissue Bank is one that it shares with its funding charities; the Multiple Sclerosis Society and Parkinson’s UK, that we can live in a world where the cause of multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease has been discovered and an intervention identified that stops these conditions from developing in susceptible individuals or stops further progression of the condition. The Tissue Bank’s mission is to facilitate these discoveries by making well-characterised human material of the highest quality readily available to the research community engaged in studies aimed at discovering the cause and better treatments for multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease. Furthermore we aim to encourage the greater use of the material in these studies. It is by carrying out this work that the Tissue Bank fulfils the last, generous and selfless wishes of all those who have registered on the donor scheme and bequeathed their CNS tissues to research.
