  • Research summary

The presence of more than one health condition (multimorbidity) has a major impact on people’s lives. People with longstanding (persistent) musculoskeletal pain or arthritis often have other health conditions.
We know heart disease and depression are common in people with arthritis but know less about what other conditions people with other types of persistent musculoskeletal pain have. We do not know the effect that living with multimorbidity and persistent musculoskeletal pain has on quality of life and health-related outcomes.

People living with multimorbidity and those who support them have much ‘work’ to do to manage their conditions. Some have more capacity to manage their condition than others. Capacity may be affected by personal or external resources by, severity of health conditions, the level of physical and mental wellbeing, and other issues.
Our study will explore the presence and experience of multimorbidity in people with persistent musculoskeletal pain and how the presence of multiple health conditions affects people’s capacity to manage.
This study is comprised of two parts. First we will interview people living with persistent musculoskeletal pain or RA to explore experiences of living with and managing persistent musculoskeletal pain or RA and multimorbidity.
Second, we will also interview health care professionals (HCPs) to explore experiences of treating and managing patients with persistent musculoskeletal pain or RA and multimorbidity.
Our findings will help us to develop new ways of managing and tailoring treatments for people living with persistent musculoskeletal pain or RA and multimorbidity.
