Research summary
Hallucinations are traditionally viewed as discrete experiences; however such an approach runs the risk of neglecting hallucinations that occur across two or more sensory modalities (multimodal hallucinations). With growing evidence suggesting that visual hallucinations are rarely experienced without auditory hallucinations, this study aimed to explore multimodal hallucinations in a psychosis sample and compare this to other disorders. \n\nAll participants in the studies mentioned previously completed the North East Visual Hallucinations Interview (Mossiman et al., 2008), which has provided rich data on peoples visual hallucinations. By running a secondary analysis on this data, we aim to explore whether people have multimodal hallucinations for example, whether people have visions that talk to or touch them. This study plans to provide descriptive results of multimodal hallucinations in psychosis and compare these to other disorders such as Lewy body dementia and eye disease. By understanding more about peoples hallucinatory experiences, it will help develop our understanding of the theoretical underpinnings and clinical practice.
