Research summary
This multi sited, mixed methods cohort study will map the impact of the roll out of the Snuby®, a mother-infant skin to skin undergarment,in sequential re-use in at least two different acute and community settings in England. The benefits of skin to skin are numerous (WHO 2003,Conde-Agudelo and Díaz-Rossello’s 2014) but its facilitation other than immediate birth does not occur (Vesel et al 2015,Valsangkar 2015). All pregnant women with a normal BMI, a term singleton where mother and infant are in a stable condition following any type of birth will be eligible. Flyers will have been circulated in the community via the midwives and GP surgeries. Women will be informed of the details of the study in maternity assessment unit, birthing unit and delivery suite and written consent gained and the first questionnaire on demographics and knowledge of skin to skin and feeding will be undertaken. Following the of birth of their baby consent will be confirmed if mother and baby are stable. One of the three sizes of undergarment will be fitted and issued to the mother with instructions on usage, which includes taking the baby's underarm temperature and following 30 minutes of wear. A diary is completed of the mothers and baby's behaviour before and after use including any infant feeding for up to 2 weeks. The baby's weight will be recorded in the diary on at least occasions. On collection of the undergarment and diary a further questionnaire will be completed. Experiences of clinicians in maternity of women using the undergarment will also be gained using a pre and post questionnaire. The undergarments will be numbered, measured, checked pre and post use and washed at 60degrees C before reissue.
