Research summary
The ionic composition for trace and bulk metals of nasal mucus in healthy student volunteers has now been analysed and can act as reference values. We are interested in the values of metallic cations in the nasal mucus of inflammatory nasal polyp and allergic rhinitis patients. This is because there is a rational hypothesis that the levels of magnesium, iron, manganese and others may vary between these patients and normal controls. The research will painlessly collect mucus from awake patients with proven nasal polyposis and allergic rhinitis. These patients will be either awaiting surgery on the Day Surgery ward, or in General OPD. Control samples will be collected from tonsillitis patients. This latter group will comprise mostly young, healthy patients. The collection process takes 15 minutes, and has been validated for acceptability in volunteers. The analytical methods have also been validated in a previous study. The mucus will be stored in a freezer, and later analysed in a laboratory using chromatography techniques. These are destructive methods, which do not expose the scientist to any viral biohazard.
