Research summary
Worldwide, bowel cancer is the 3rd most common cancer; risk increases with age and is modified by lifestyle factors notably diet, physical activity, obesity and smoking. The proposed study is a 10 year follow-up of participants recruited to the Biomarkers of Risk of Colon Cancer (BORICC) Study. This project will investigate associations between lifestyle factors, particularly diet, and a panel of mucosal molecular biomarkers linked with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. It builds on the findings from the BORICC study at baseline where we observed associations between age and nutritional factors, including selenium and folate, on biomarkers of colorectal health.
Participants who took part in the BORICC Study at Baseline will be invited to participate in the follow-up study at Wansbeck and North Tyneside General Hospitals. Repeat measures will be made and samples will be collected to investigate the impact of ageing (over 10 years) on biomarkers of colorectal health and ageing.REC name
