Research summary
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a long term neurological condition affecting over 130,000 people in the UK. MRI scans are essential for diagnosing MS and deciding on treatment, but many NHS hospitals face delays due to shortages of specialist radiologists. These delays can mean people wait longer to start treatments that slow disability, and the impact is often worse for people living in deprived areas or from minority ethnic backgrounds.
This study will test an artificial intelligence (AI) tool called BR[AI]N MS that automatically analyses MRI scans. The tool can identify and measure MS related damage quickly and consistently, supporting doctors to make faster and more accurate decisions. By using existing NHS scans and records, we aim to show whether this technology can reduce delays, improve fairness, and help ensure that everyone with MS has equal access to high quality care regardless of where they live.
