Research summary
The aim of this study is to assess a range of quantitative MRI and ultrasound measurement techniques for the assessment of muscle pathology. The feasibility and range of variation will be determined for each technique in each diagnostic group. In addition, the reproducibility of MRI and shear wave elastography, and its sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis will be calculated.
This data will provide useful information about the best MRI and ultrasound techniques for diagnosis and suitable threshold values. The data will provide preliminary evidence for a number of research questions described below, as well as inform the choice of techniques and power calculations for future longitudinal studies and studies of the effects of treatment (except for Element 4).Following the collection of preliminary data it is hypothesised that the following research questions could be elucidated:
Element 1: Are there differences in tissue properties between myositis (muscle inflammation) patients and healthy controls as assessed by imaging?
Element 2: What are the specific patterns of MR and US imaging in the muscles in rheumatoid arthritis and is there subclinical myositis in discrete rheumatic diseases?
Element 3: Are there changes in tissue properties between suspected steroid-induced myopathies and healthy controls as assessed by imaging?
Element 4: Are there differences in changes of tissue properties over time between sarcopenia (muscle loss) patients and healthy controls as assessed by imaging?
Element 5: Can contrast-enhanced MRI be used to evaluate the presence of early subclinical or established muscle fibrosis in systemic sclerosis?REC name
