Research summary
Patients who were involved in a previous MRI study in 2010, looking at a specific neuromuscular condition called ‘Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2I’ are being approached to be re-scanned five years after the last study. The new study intends to measure any changes that have occurred in the leg muscles and heart muscle since 2010. The MRI machine will be used to look at the amount of fat within muscles in the thigh and then the machine will scan the heart to look at any changes in its stiffness or in the way it beats. We intend to inject a dye which gives us more information about scarring in the heart muscle. The dye is called “Dotarem” and is commonly used for this purpose in hospitals throughout the UK and rest of the world. We also intend to clinically assess the patients prior to scanning which involves a physiotherapist assessment of the patients in a number of ways designed to look at muscle function, such as seeing how far patients can walk in six minutes. The physiotherapists will also assess the patients’ breathing muscles using a small machine. All data will be compared to the information gained from the last study to give us a full idea of the progression of muscles within Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy 2I over a long (5 year) period.
