Research summary
Crohn’s disease (CD) is inflammation of the intestines. It is an incurable disease that affects thousands of people in the UK alone. Today, it is diagnosed through camera tests and biopsies which are uncomfortable for patients to undergo. Therefore, other mechanisms to monitor inflammation in the intestines, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), are desirable. The inflamed intestines of CD patients are wrapped in fat within the abdomen. The more inflamed the intestines are, the more embedded in fat they become. Knowing this, we predict that if we measure the amount of fat surrounding the intestines along with other fat characteristics using 3T and 7T MRI scanners, we will be able to evaluate the inflammation within the intestines. We are also planning on investigating other aspects of the abdominal fat such as blood flow , fat density and liver fat volumes using MRI technology . In this study we will aim to recruit 25 CD patients and compare the results with healthy volunteers scans the were acquired previously. Each patient will be scanned once on a 3T MRI scanner and a 7T MRI scanner most likely in the same day.
