Research summary
We aim to use already collected tissue samples to find out how placentas are affected by a drug (metformin) commonly used during pregnancy. We will use previously collected samples from two studies, one where women were randomised to receive metformin as part of a clinical trial and one where women had metformin as part of their routine clinical care. We will also try treating placental cells outside of the body with metformin to further investigate how placental cells respond to this drug. The techniques used will be standard laboratory assays, for example quantifying RNA, protein levels and looking at markers of respiration and ageing.
