Research summary
There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that cancer survivors experience reduced physical activity levels and a poorer quality of life at both short and long term intervals. Macmillan have made recent recommendations that there is a need to support people in maintaining or initiating physical activity during and after treatment. This primary aim of this research is to measure the physical activity levels of patients who have undergone major joint replacement for Sarcoma (a cancerous tumour of bone or soft tissue). Eligible patients who attend for a one week rehabilitation stay at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital will be invited to participate. They will be asked to wear a device called Activpal which measures active and inactive time, time spent in different postures (lying, standing, sitting) and the number of transitions between these, number of steps and energy expenditure. The device will be worn one month prior to rehabilitation, during the rehabilitation stay and at 3 months post rehabilitation. They will be asked to carry on with their normal activities during this time. Data will be analysed to determine whether a one week rehabilitation week is an effective intervention for increasing physical activity levels, and whether these levels are positively influenced at mid term follow up compared to baseline. The results of the study may assist in providing evidence of effectiveness of our rehabilitation programme at improving physical activity levels and thus health and wellbeing.
