Research summary
This study aims to identify the barriers and facilitators to a ‘successful discharge’ for patients, from forensic services. A ‘successful discharge’ is where a patient has been discharged from forensic secure services and has remained in the community and not been recalled to services. The study will adopt a qualitative approach, exploring the views of current and former forensic inpatients who have been discharged or have been in the process of being discharged from forensic secure services. In addition, the study will also explore the views of forensic inpatients who have been discharged from low and medium secure forensic services* and then been recalled to services. Through prioritising the views of patients, we aim to identify any barriers and facilitators to a successful discharge. Many patients are recalled to forensic services, suggesting that the needs of the patients have not been met. There is also a high financial cost to secure care. It follows that research is needed to find out why patients are being recalled to hospital and make necessary changes to reduce the number of patients being recalled to services.
