Research summary
Many infants born preterm suffer from disabilities including cerebral palsy (CP). Identifying infants most at risk is challenging. Early risk stratification has many benefits including the appropriate targeting of resources and support for parents.
The Lacey Assessment of Preterm Infants (LAPI) is a clinical assessment of preterm infants undertaken at preterm age prior to discharge. It is an assessment of neurological status and aims to identify features indicating that the infant is at risk of abnormal neurodevelopmental outcome such as CP. The LAPI is widely used in clinical practice, however, data supporting its use is limited and no studies have compared the LAPI assessment to Prechtl’s General Movements (GM) Assessment, for which the evidence base is well established.
