  • Research summary

This research aims to assess and explore patient and physiotherapist experiences of musculoskeletal (MSK) consultations before and after physiotherapist motivational interviewing (MI) training.
MI has been found to be an effective way of talking with people, to help people to weigh up if they want to make changes in how they manage their healthcare. Previous research has found a lack of quality studies that look at the use of MI specifically in MSK physiotherapy care.
This study therefore aims to assess the use of MI, with physiotherapists who currently care for people who have musculoskeletal problems in physiotherapy outpatient departments across North Wales in Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board. It also aims to understand patients and physiotherapist perspectives on current care and care after physiotherapist training in MI.
The study has two parts that run in parallel over a 6-month period. Part one involves patients receiving usual care from a physiotherapist who is taking part in the study. Patients will be asked to consent to their consultation being recorded and shared with the research team and also be asked to complete a questionnaire. Submission of recordings by each volunteering physiotherapist will be from two different patients, once immediately after MI-training and once three months after initial training. Submission of questionnaires be from three different patients, once before MI training, once immediately after training and once three months after initial training (a different patient from the physiotherapists caseload each time).
Part two involves physiotherapist and patient attendance at a brief interview based upon their experience of the physiotherapy consultation (if selected, a patient will only attend once, either before the MI training period or after the MI training period). Some, not all physiotherapists will also be invited to attend for interview on their experience of the physiotherapy consultation three months after training.
