Research summary
Effective plaque control is fundamental for the success of different treatment modalities related to dentistry in general and periodontology in particular. There are different methods to optimise patients self-performed plaque control. Recently, an interest in motivational interviewing as a method to achieve this goal has increased.
The purpose of this study is to assess whether oral hygiene instructions given to patients with motivational interviewing style will make them more compliant with these instructions resulting in significantly lower full mouth plaque scores as compared to routine oral hygiene chair side instructions.
Participants will be recruited into two groups. The Treatment group will receive oral hygiene instructions through motivational interviewing, while the control group will get the instructions with the usual routine chair side method.
The motivational interviewing will commence prior to the patients starting with their treatments. The patients Full mouth plaque scores for both groups will be recorded at the initial examination visit, prior to the treatment, and then at the end of the treatment. at the end of the study, the scores from both groups will be compared to assess the effectiveness of the motivational interviewing.
