Research summary
Opiate replacement therapy (ORT)(eg methadone)has been demonstrated to prolong lives of people who inject drugs (PWID) by reducing risk. Despite minimising and stopping illicit drug use, a disappointingly small percentage of patients manage to become abstinent from ORT, leading to long term use of ORT over many decades. This study will ask all patients receiving ORT if they will reduce their ORT now, sometime in the future, or have no plans. We then aim to study the factors in life, as identified by the Christo Inventory (a ten-step questionnaire), to observe whether there are any aspects of life which are strongly associated, whether positively or negatively, with the motivation to become abstinent. If any factors are identified, then it is hoped that services can be tailored to suit the needs of the individual to give them the best support.
