Research summary
Exercise-based prehabilitation and rehabilitation can improve short- and long-term health and wellbeing outcomes in people with cancer, including those with liver cancer. However, this population often presents with complex clinical and supportive care needs, requiring a highly personalised and holistic approach. Delivering such services within the constraints of routine NHS care is therefore challenging.
In response, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (LUHFT) and The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust (CCC), in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), have developed a clinical exercise physiologist (CEP)–led, mobile health (mHealth)–supported exercise-based prehabilitation and rehabilitation service for people with liver cancer awaiting treatment.
This study will evaluate implementation of the service, examining its feasibility within routine care pathways and its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes. A nested process evaluation will provide contextual insight into how the service is delivered and experienced, informing ongoing refinement.
This multi-centre implementation trial will collect data from patients enrolled in the service between April 2026 and March 2028. Data sources will include anonymised clinical data extracted from patient records held by LUHFT, CCC and the LJMU clinic, alongside questionnaire and interview data collected from consenting patients.
In line with Medical Research Council guidance on process evaluation and the RE-AIM implementation framework, the study will assess Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance.
