  • Research summary

We want to improve the poor physical health of people who use forensic mental health services. These people are likely to have a shorter life than the general population, and are more likely to have serious physical health problems. Side effects of medication, unhealthy diet, not exercising enough, and being more likely to smoke all contribute. People in forensic services are also more at risk, as they often have longer stays in hospital (5-15years), less freedom to exercise, higher medication dosages with more side effects.

At Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS FT we have worked with service users and staff to create a new intervention to address physical health – Motiv8. It is a 9-week programme which aims to reduce weight gain using cooking classes, physical health education and group exercise sessions, all provided by skilled inpatient staff. We have tested this already and found people enjoyed it, got fitter and felt more confident. We are now going to test this in a larger study in secure inpatient units in adult forensic services at Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. We will recruit 4 groups of people to take part and will do a randomised trial, where half will get Motiv8 straight away and half will get usual treatment (and then get Motiv8 afterwards). This is so we can compare any differences and see how useful Motiv8 could be. Participants will complete questionnaires about mental health, physical health and their behaviours before and after Motiv8 (or TAU), and then again after 12 weeks to see if they have continued to eat well/exercise. We will also be doing some interviews with people who take part to see how they found it.

We hope to show Motiv8 can be run in NHS services.
