Research summary
Type 2 diabetes is usually thought of as a disease of older adults, but it is increasingly being diagnosed in younger people, including teenagers and young adults <40 years. This early-onset form of type 2 diabetes is more aggressive than the later-onset form and leads to complications such as kidney damage and eye disease much sooner and earlier death. It is also more common in people from minority ethnic backgrounds. Despite this, there is limited research that studies how early-onset type 2 diabetes affects different ethnic groups, and how it progresses over time.
The MOSAIC-ET2D study aims to better understand the differences in early-onset type 2 diabetes presents in people from different ethnic backgrounds. The study will include up to 2,000 people who were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before the age of 40-years and are currently aged 8 to 39-years. Participants will be invited to attend a single study visit, where they will have physical measurements taken, provide a blood and urine sample, and complete a questionnaire. The visit will take approximately 45 minutes.
Samples will be analysed to look at markers in the blood and DNA that may explain why the disease behaves differently in different people. Researchers will also link this information to NHS health records to understand how the condition changes over time and what complications develop.
The goal of the study is to support more personalised and tailored care for people with early-onset type 2 diabetes, and to make sure future research reflects the needs of diverse communities affected by this condition.REC name
