Research summary
Patients with special care needs (disabilities, phobia, ill-health etc) who are unable to co-operate for dental treatment in the usual way can be referred to have dental treatment carried out under general anaesthetic (GA) in hospital. Senior dentists in the Community Dental Service provide fillings, scaling and polish, x-rays, extractions in individual cases as found necessary to complete all treatment in one visit. These are referred to as Special Care Dental GA lists.
Because so much treatment is provided in one visit the GA is prolonged and recovery to full health can be slow for some patients, especially as they often have a number of health issues leaving them more likely to develop complications.
The aim of this study is to determine how common it is for patients being treated on the Special Care GA lists to suffer complications or ill-health following this treatment by following them up with telephone calls to complete a structured questionnaire.
The study will also collect data on factors that may influence how well a patient recovers. Patients, parents and carers, as appropriate, will be invited to tell us how they found the whole experience and make suggestions on how we could improve the service.
From the findings we should be better able to determine the level of risk associated with this procedure and so advise patients more accurately about the likelihood of potential complications and offer advice about how to reduce the risk in the future.REC name
