Research summary
Babies with perinatal acidosis are a heterogeneous patient group. In order to correctly identify babies with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE) and offer therapeutic hypothermia treatment for eligible infants, all babies with a low cord ph of < 7 are admitted for 6 hours of cerebral function monitoring in accordance with a South Western neonatal network guideline. There is concern that this practice results in unnecessary admissions and additional burden on NICUs.
Our aim is to examine the morbidities seen in babies with perinatal acidosis. Furthermore, we also would like to investigate whether we can identify early predictors for the development of HIE that might help to correctly identify babies with HIE and offer timely treatment.REC name
