Research summary
The aim of this project is to develop a clinical registry of disease characteristics that can be linked to genetic data obtained through a collaboration with the NIHR BioResource Research Tissue Bank. The clinical registry will collect historical data looking back and include information from specialist care for clinical cohorts of patients with Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and Open Angle Glaucoma (OAG). Analyses will primarily aim to identify genetic associations for the onset and progression of DR (including sight-threatening DR) and disease progression and response to treatments for OAG. This will facilitate the development of clinical risk prediction models incorporating genetic and clinical biomarkers for both DR and OAG. It will provide a unique opportunity to enable stratified medicine and develop research towards the provision of personalised care for patients. This resource can be used to help develop research into those affected and at risk of the leading worldwide causes of irreversible visual impairment.
