Research summary
The current study seeks to investigate the acceptance of the use of a smartwatch in an internet-delivered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) based intervention for depression. CBT for depression is evidence-based and recommended as first-line treatment in NICE clinical guidelines in the UK.
Eligible patients (n=40) will be invited to use the supported intervention over an 8-week period. Participants will indicate interest in taking part and complete screening measures online before being randomised in two arms: iCBT intervention - iCBT intervention (n=20) and iCBT intervention with smartwatch (n=20). Participants who decline consent will be excluded from the study and will receive iCBT treatment as usual. Participants in the smartwatch group will be given a smartwatch for the duration of treatment. The program app installed on the smartwatch will allow participants to monitor their mood in the moment, and automatically keep track of their daily sleep and physical activity. All participants will be asked to complete an acceptance questionnaire regarding the technology at three time points: before first use, at 3 weeks, and 8 weeks. Participants’ answers to the questionnaires and their engagement with the technology will be analysed to assess their acceptance of the intervention.
The findings will be used to understand the feasibility of the use of a smartwatch to enhance monitoring in an online intervention for depression. The findings will inform the design of the smartwatch app, and will contribute to the novel body of knowledge on the acceptance of wearable devices in mental health interventions.
