Research summary
Structured exercise training is a main component of the cardiac rehabilitation (CR) process. However, specific to UK CR programmes - there are concerns that patients do not receive a similar training volume to other programmes in North America and Europe (Sandercock et al 2012; West et al 2012). We know that there is a strong epidemiological relationship between increasing cardiorespiratory fitness and mortality benefits, and there are concerns that we are not providing patients with a strong enough training stimulus in the UK. To date, no studies have tried to systematically quantify how much physical activity cardiac patients undertake during a structured 8-week Phase III CR programme and no studies have measured the validity of using an Apple Watch Sport in a CR setting. We will use an Apple Watch Sport, which will be paired to a smart phone, to quantify the training intensity and load achieved by patients and we will use the Apple Watch Sport against accelerometer and HR monitoring to test its validity.
